How to Equip and Change Skins in Rust (Both Methods)

Short answer: there are two ways to equip a skin in Rust on PC. During crafting: open the crafting menu (Q), select the item, and pick a skin from the selection window that pops up if you own any. After crafting: put the item in a repair bench, open the skins segment, and click the skin you want; it applies instantly and costs nothing. Your choice saves at account level, so the item crafts with that skin on every server. On console, only the crafting route exists.

That’s the whole trick, and yet “why can’t I equip my skin” is one of the most-asked questions in the game, because three specific situations break the flow. Here’s the complete picture, including all three fixes.

Method 1: pick the skin while crafting

  • 1. Open crafting with Q and select the item you want to make.
  • 2. Click the skin icon. If you own skins for that item, a selection window opens automatically showing everything available.
  • 3. Pick and craft. The choice saves at account level: from now on, every copy you craft spawns with that skin on any server, until you change it.

Method 2: reskin an existing item at a repair bench

Already have the gun, door or box and want a different look? Place it in a repair bench, and if you own skins for that item type, a skins segment appears in the interface. Click the skin and it applies immediately. It’s free, unlimited, and works on looted items too: yes, you can put your skin on a gun you just took off someone. On console this option doesn’t exist; skins go on at crafting only, one of the differences we cover in the console skins guide.

The three reasons your skin isn’t showing

  • The 7-day store lock. Skins bought in the weekly item store are usable immediately, but skins received via trade or marketplace purchase can sit in Steam-side pending states first. If a skin isn’t in your inventory yet, it isn’t equippable yet. Timers are explained in our trade holds guide.
  • Wrong item variant. Skins are item-specific: a Large Wood Box skin does nothing for a small box, an AK skin nothing for an LR300. Check the exact item name on the skin’s store page.
  • Inventory not synced. Fresh purchases sometimes need a game restart before Rust sees them. Restart before assuming something’s broken.

Do skins change anything besides looks?

No stats: damage, durability and recoil are identical on every skin. The one honest gameplay effect is visibility, which cuts both ways: dark skins blend at night, white suits vanish on snow, and a glowing door makes your base a landmark. We rate that trade-off per slot in the best Rust skins guide. If you don’t own skins yet, the cheapest routes are a marketplace (15 to 30% under Steam prices, see the marketplace rankings) or earning them free via the routes in our free skins guide.

FAQ

How do I change a skin on an item I already have?

Put the item in a repair bench. If you own skins for that item type, a skins segment appears; click the one you want and it applies instantly, free. This works on any compatible item, including looted ones. Console players can’t do this; crafting-stage only.

Does reskinning at a repair bench cost anything?

No. Applying or changing skins at a repair bench is free and repeatable. The repair function of the bench costs resources; the skin swap does not. You can change your mind as often as you like.

Why is my new skin not in the crafting menu?

Usually one of three things: the skin is still in a Steam-side pending state after a trade or purchase, it’s for a different item variant than you think, or the game hasn’t synced your inventory yet. Restart Rust first; that fixes most cases.

Do skins carry over between servers and wipes?

Your skin ownership lives on your Steam account, so it survives every wipe and works on every server. The crafted items themselves are lost on wipe like everything else; you just craft them again with the skin applied.
