How to Gift Rust Skins Without Hitting a Trade Lock

Short answer: you gift Rust skins through a Steam trade, because the item store has no gifting option: everything you buy there lands in your own inventory. The flow is simple: add the person as a Steam friend, right-click their name, choose the trade option, add your skins and send. Two timers can slow it down: skins bought in the item store are locked from trading for 7 days after purchase, and if either account’s mobile authenticator is newer than 7 days (or missing), Steam adds a hold of up to 15 days.

Gifting a skin is the best cheap gesture in Rust, a $2 rock skin says more than most Discord messages, but the timers catch people constantly, especially before birthdays. Here’s the complete flow with every timing rule that applies.

The gifting flow, step by step

  • 1. Be Steam friends. Direct trades run through the friends system. Send the request early; brand-new friendships can add friction to trading.
  • 2. Open a trade. Right-click their name in your friends list and pick the trade option, or use their trade URL (Inventory → Trade Offers → Who can send me Trade Offers).
  • 3. Add your skins, ask nothing back. A gift is a one-sided trade. Double-check the item list before sending; trades are final once accepted.
  • 4. They confirm. The recipient accepts, both confirm via mobile authenticator, and the skins land in their inventory, ready to equip via crafting or a repair bench (see how to equip skins).

The two timers that ruin surprise gifts

First: item store purchases carry a 7-day trade lock. You cannot buy a skin from this week’s rotation and gift it the same day; buy at least a week ahead, or buy the skin on a marketplace instead, where already-circulating copies often trade without that lock. Second: Steam’s own hold system. If your mobile authenticator has been active for 7+ days, your trades go through without holds; a missing or freshly added authenticator means holds of up to 15 days on the trade. Both rules, with every edge case, are in our trade holds guide.

Buying a gift the smart way

The cheapest route is buying the skin on a third-party marketplace (15 to 30% below Steam prices, see the marketplace rankings), delivered to your inventory, then trading it onward. Note that some marketplace deliveries also pass through Steam-side timers before the item is re-tradable, so for a date-specific gift, buy 7 to 10 days ahead, whatever the route. Gift ideas by budget: a rock or door skin under $2 for the joke, a matching set family around $5 for the teammate, an AK from our AK skins guide for the friend who carried your wipe.

Scam warning for gift trades

Gifting flows are exactly where trade scammers operate: fake “Steam admins” claiming your gift flagged your account, phishing links to fake trade pages, and switched trade offers. The rules that keep you safe are short: trades happen only on steamcommunity.com, no legitimate party ever asks for your password or 2FA codes, and you re-read the trade window before confirming on mobile. Sending to the wrong person is irreversible.

FAQ

Can you gift skins directly from the Rust item store?

No. The item store has no gift option; purchases go to your own inventory only. To gift, buy the skin (store or marketplace), wait out any trade lock, then send it via a Steam trade. Plan roughly a week ahead for store-bought skins.

How long before I can gift a skin I just bought?

Item store purchases: 7 days. Marketplace purchases: often sooner, but Steam-side timers can still apply to the delivery. On top of that, a missing or new mobile authenticator adds holds of up to 15 days. Safe rule for deadlines: buy 7 to 10 days early.

Do I need to be Steam friends to gift skins?

For the standard flow, yes: direct trades run through the friends system or a shared trade URL. Add each other ahead of time. Never accept a “gifting service” from a stranger who messages you first; that’s a standard scam opener.

Can gifted skins be taken back?

No. Once a trade completes, it’s final; Steam doesn’t reverse voluntary trades. That’s also why you double-check the recipient and the item list before confirming. If you’re ever unsure mid-trade, cancel and start over; nothing is lost by restarting.
